Premise[]
Welcome to Arcadia! A retro-futuristic metropolis where the citizens don't know they're contestants on the most-watched reality show on the planet! Uncover the truth and escape with your life in ‘American Arcadia’!
Plot[]
It’s a 2.5D puzzle platformer set in a dystopian reality TV show world, following an alternate version of the Cold War. The game follows the story of Trevor Hills, an average guy whose life is broadcasted 24/7 without his knowledge. He lives in the city of Arcadia, a metropolis inspired by 1970s retro-future design and Walt Disney's EPCOT. The twist is that Trevor is one of the show’s least popular cast members due to his routinized life, and the Walton company running the show plans to eliminate him since he’s not profitable enough.
It is alternate historical timeline, in which Walter Ulbricht's embalmed body was housed and preserved in the Ulbricht Mausoleum in East Berlin, East Germany after his death in 1973. In 1981, John Hinckley Jr. assassinates Ronald Regan, allowing Walter Mondale to become President of the United States. However, the Berlin Wall never fell, and the Soviet Union, Comecon, and the Warsaw Pact are also never dissolved.
The game begins with a brief introduction by the founder of American Arcadia, Elijah Walton, inside episode 394 of Architects of the Future in 1959, where the visionary media mogul presents a utopian city where thousands of people live in harmony and happiness.
The game then switches to the Documentary Movie by the Solano Hills Productions Firm about Trevor Hills' Escape and how he learned that he was part of a TV show.
We are then put into the gameplay where we play through his life. Two weeks before that "Dreadful Day", he notices some strange messages on billboards and screens at his work at the INAC Gemini Towers that seem to be directed at him with the leitmotif of "Don't be a Fool". He follows them and meets Kovacs, a hacker and rebel who infiltrated the city's CCTV network to help Trevor escape. The name is based on Arpod Kovacs, an important member of the story and a close friend of Elijah Walton.
The game alternates between Trevor's and Angela’s perspectives, as they work together to evade the security forces and find a way out of the city. Trevor’s segments are played as a fast-paced 2.5D puzzle platformer, where he has to use the environment and objects to overcome obstacles and enemies. Angela has two types of segments, the Hacking and the IRL segments. The Hacking one requires the player to coordinate with Trevor and help him evade the security forces by activating/deactivating the Technology. Sometimes, the game requires the player to switch between the two characters and coordinate their actions. Angela’s 3D segments are played as a first-person 3D puzzle game, where you have to break into facilities or get Trevor stuff like the Badge into Arcadia.
As the game progresses, the plot reveals more twists and turns, such as the Jingle, a sound built into the Brains of Arcadians to keep them in, or the fact that the Edge grant winners weren't killed but sent to a vacation spot. Angela Solano's real name or you can also find the Visio-Rama Technology in Old Arcadia as well as the Quitting of Arpad Kovacs. The true identity and motives of the CEO of Walton Media, Vivian Walton, pretends to be Number Six, but shortly after it is revealed that she is indeed the real Number Six, Emily Garland. The fact that she planned Trevor's escape and that Breakout is controlled Dissidence from her and the other Members.
The largest plot twist is that Vivian planned for Trevor's Escape and turned it into a new AA Sequel.
